Driving Defensively

Defensive driving is not just about defending yourself by locking the doors when you get in the car, whilst this is an obvious thing to do and will help prevent someone from opening your door at traffic lights. An alternative to stopping at the lights would be to slow down a little earlier, giving yourself the chance to plan for the lights to change and giving you the advantage. This will not only allow you to keep the car moving it will give you the chance to see the potential of a developing situation and avoid it.

Noisy, loud or erratic drivers behind you, try to stay calm and maintain a consistent speed then wait for them to overtake. It is easier for you if they are in front of you rather than behind. Once they are in front of you keep a safe distance from them and do nothing to attract their attention, slow down gradually and increase the distance between you and them. This will give you space and time to anticipate and plan, potentially avoiding stopping at the next junction.

Destination Sign Posts, (end of road) will tell you at least two things where you will end up if you turn left and where you will end up if you turn right. It will also tell you where you have come from this being the sign that is pointing towards you that you will only be able to see once you are at least level with it.

An easy rule of thumb if you are lost is: Turn left and go to the next main junction,

turn left and go to the next main junction because from here you will have at least four locations and will

be able to either see it on a map or explain where you are to someone else.
